Sometime last winter and I was stumbling around some unfamiliar parts of the city, hoping to find some inspiration, and then I saw this, well, red machine.

Zoom in, get rid of all extraneous background material, and revel in the purity of its colour.

What is it? I have no idea, and it doesn’t matter: but I think such a striking hue makes a refreshing change from my usual sombre tones..

Japan is often an ugly mess of concrete and electric cables, but beauty can still be found here and there.

This is an old cycling route of mine along the river for a few kilometres of car-free bliss. It’s best in any season except summer, and in the afternoon the clouds frequently put on a nice show.

Last summer I based myself in Sorrento, a little holiday resort on the Bay of Naples.

I never really saw the town during the day, despite being there for a full week: rather, I used it as a base to explore Pompeii, Herculaneum, Amalfi and Capri.

In the evening, however, after returning from my excursions, I would come out and walk along the spectacular coastline, enjoying both the sea breeze and the amazing views of the bay with Vesuvius lurking menacingly in the background.

Being a hater of tripods, I just stuck the camera on a wall, held my breath, and pressed the shutter, which in this case stayed open for five seconds.

It was a cold night in December 2009, and I found myself wandering around late at night with a friend in a small Japanese town looking for interesting things to photograph.

At this stage, although I’d just bought my Nikon D90, I was still unaware of the creative possibilities of digital photography, but my friend showed me how to employ ISO to add texture and how to experiment with the white balance to create warmer tones.

All this came as something of a revelation, and hence this particular shot is very special for me, despite its imperfections: I even used it as the jacket for one of my CDs.

Late afternoon always makes for the best colours, and so it was on this day last December when I visited the island of Miyajima, near Hiroshima.

Behind the Itsukushima shrine I found this old wooden bridge as I was preparing to leave, and marvelled at the amber shades offsetting the pale blue winter sky.

Incidentally, Japan has wonderfully dry winters, with many blue sky days, making for fine photographic conditions. This contrasts with the appalling rainy season and summer we are now in, with high humidity and temperatures, almost every day swaddled in low grey cloud diffusing the light and reducing all colour to a uniform drabness. Time to escape to Europe!

One of my favourite photographs, this dates from last September of last year. I was perched up on a balcony in St Mark’s basilica, Venice, taking some shots with a 55-200mm zoom on the Nikon D90.

The square below was flooded (as it periodically is), and I just homed in on this man taking a snap with his camera, a kind of ‘the watchers are being watched’ type thing.

I like the white cross behind him, the glare off the water and the odd red filter, which I think I added later that night in-camera. It was just a random effect selection, but it really adds something to the shot.

Not too happy to have to be working on Saturday again, but once more a magnificent cloudscape greeted me upon arrival at the university campus.

Not having the D7000 handy (and kicking myself, because I’d considered bringing it this morning) I had to be content with the iPhone, but at least it’s instant and the moment can be shared only minutes after its occurrence.

Note to self: learn more about clouds – I couldn’t tell a cumulus from…any other type I don’t know the name for!

It was raining cats and dogs and I was stuck at home with…the cats.

I peeped out onto the balcony and noticed the railings were reflected onto the wet surface amid the downpour, so I grabbed the D90 and took a few shots, some zooming in, trying to freeze the splashes, but this one was for the wider view.

Too dark and gloomy? Not enough of interest? I rather like its bleak minimalism.

NAME CHANGE

I just changed the name of this blog from boring Andy Lightfoot Photography to the more exciting (and no doubt pretentious) Experiments in Light.

Partly I just wanted to differentiate this blog from my gallery website, also titled Andy Lightfoot Photography, and partly because most other folks in the field have much cooler sounding names for their blogs and I was feeling inadequate.

Cheers!
