Ladies of Rome : photographed August 2012

An assortment of wonderful stone females I found hanging around the Italian capital.

I love taking pictures of statues. More so than of real people, because you can take your time to concentrate on the lighting and framing which you might not be able to do with pesky fidgety living subjects…

Palazzo della Civilta Italiana, EUR, Rome : photographed August 26th 2012

The EUR district of Rome is often overlooked by most tourists, which is probably just as well, since this crumbling collection of monolithic concrete buildings are slowly decaying and apparently empty, testament to the insanely grandiose designs of Mussolini who created them in the 1930′s. The whole mad experiment is redeemed, however, by the wonderful Palazzo della Civilta Italiana, an imposing cubist makeover of the colosseum. I was there on a stormy day, but got lucky when a ray of sunlight illuminated the edifice against a backdrop of threatening clouds.

King’s College Chapel, Cambridge : 16th August 2012

Finished during the reign of Henry VIII in the early sixteenth century, this really is a stunning piece of architecture. I can only regret that I wasn’t bright enough to be able to attend such a prestigious university as Cambridge. Who could not be inspired by such surroundings?

(Don’t forget that clicking on the photos will take you to larger and more spectacular versions of these pictures…)

“Cubism” : 27th March 2012

There’s a stretch of riverside from Hiroshima station heading east which is enjoying a much needed redevelopment. After looking like a bomb site for a couple of years following the mass demolition of old crumbling slums, the place is now a hive of activity with bright new buildings mushrooming everywhere and even the appearance of a drive-through Starbucks. Along the river there are a series of interesting climbing frames for the kids, each containing a different shape at its centre. The local children don’t seem to be using these, which is just as well for me, as I just love photographing them with my ultra wide zoom lens.

“Urban Sieve” : Tokyo, 18th March 2012

As I walked backed to my hotel one night I passed a new apartment building around which were these large metal panels with dot patterns on them and lights behind, radiating out through the holes.

I like these attempts to make urban housing more liveable by adding a few artistic touches to the surroundings…

“Statue Silhouette” : Tokyo, 17th March 2012

Another shot from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building complex in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

In the absence of sunlight I opted to produce a silhouette, which worked very well against the pale sky, particularly after applying a filter to simulating night.

“Tokyo Metal” : 17th March 2012

This impressively modern installation resides just in front of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building in Shinjuku, although with a whole host of other abstract pieces of art. This is about as far from traditional Japan as you can get, architecturally speaking…

“Red Girder” : Tokyo, 17th March 2012

It was a cloudy and rainy day when I visited the enclave of Japanese government buildings in Shinjuku, and although I took a lot of wide-angle pictures of the enormous and impressive buildings there, none of them came out too well.

On such occasions it’s often better to zoom in and find some interesting details, which is precisely what I did here. The red girder is part of a large artistic installation in front of the giant skyscrapers which I decided to use to bisect their sunless facade.

The irony is, that I also took some iPhone snaps at the same time, and these wide shots actually came out pretty well. I’ll add one in here, just so you can appreciate the size of the building…

“Art Steps” : Porto, Portugal, 9th September 2011

In yesterday’s post I mentioned a modern art exhibition inside an old hall which was none too exciting.

Well, that assessment is true, but I did like these multi-coloured steps, several versions of which were placed around the gallery.

And, of course, I’ve shot them from a weird angle to add a little mystery…

“Porto Street Art 1″ : Porto, Portugal, 9th September 2011

Porto, like Lisbon was found to be host to a lot of interesting and experimental street art that was way beyond the standard spray can type stuff found elsewhere.

“Porto Street Art 2″ : Porto, Portugal, 9th September 2011

Being a cloudy and dull day, I was really lucky to bump into all these gems on what I’m assuming is an unoccupied or condemned building.

“Porto Street Art 3″ : Porto, Portugal, 9th September 2011

Good to see some people not so downhearted at the effects of the economic recession that they can’t still attempt to inject a bit of mirth into sometimes bleak urban environments…

“Porto Street Art 4″ : Porto, Portugal, 9th September 2011
