“Portuguese Tower View” : Belem, Lisbon, 7th September 2011

I took this deceptively simple shot from Lisbon’s Torre de Belém, a sixteenth-century fortified tower on the banks of the Tagus river which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and closely associated with the age of discovery.

I say simple, because the picture straight out of the camera was suffering from some horrible distortion caused by using a wide-angle lens. Correcting this is a nightmare, so I usually don’t bother, but here it detracted from the beautiful tones and lines of the image so much that I made the effort. This involves importing the file into dedicated (but tediously slow) software where I was able to make the tower on the left and the column on the right roughly parallel.

Just for comparison, and an insight into the world of post-processing (or ‘faking it‘, as some would have it), here’s what the original picture looked like:

As well as the correction of the lens distortion, you can see that I levelled the horizon and applied a filter to the sky to produce a more pleasing tone (at least to my eyes). I think all of these changes are fairly subtle, but they improve the image enormously.

The wonders of modern technology, eh?

“Castle Reflections” : Ferrara, Italy, 25th March 2011

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I wasn’t particularly bowled over by the Italian town of Ferrara when I visited last spring.

However, it cannot be denied that the centrally located Castello Estense is an impressive structure whose sublime tones compliment a blue sky perfectly.

Just think yourselves lucky that you can’t see the hundreds of annoying schoolkids charging about everywhere on their bicycles nearly knocking you down at every turn…

“Night Spires” : Sintra, Portugal, 6th September 2011

These ornate stone structures, looking like unicorn horns, have all the hallmarks of a folly, but to be honest I can’t remember where I took this other than it was somewhere in Portugal, most likely in Sintra.

To make matters of identification worse, this was actually a daytime shot in bright sunlight which I processed in such a way as to give the impression that I took it at night, thereby removing most of the surrounding detail.

So there you go, it’s all studio trickery, but who cares? Just gaze at the image and imagine yourself to be approaching the White Witch’s palace in Narnia in the dead of night on an exciting rescue mission or something like that…

“Peeling Ceiling” : Sintra, Portugal, 6th September 2011

It’s obviously very costly to maintain an enormous castle like the Pena National Palace, and some things get neglected in favour of others, even if it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Walking along one of the corridors I happened to glance up and note not only the extensive weathering and general decay of the ceiling, but also the intriguing architectural design of six ridges coming together in a star-shape, both making for an interesting composition…

“Moorish Steps” : Sintra, Portugal, 6th September 2012

Another shot from the massive and imposing Castelo dos Mouros, although it is hard to do justice to its size and scope in any one image.

I was gingerly making my way down the steep steps when I happened to notice the woman in front of me had draped her colourful shirt over her head to combat the powerful summer sun, and this, for a fleeting second, made me think of the Arabian or Berber styles of headdress which might have been worn all those centuries ago by the people who built this place, transporting me back into the ninth century.

“Lichen Fortress” : Sintra, Portugal, 6th September 2011

The Castelo dos Mouros in Sintra is twelve hundred years old and sits atop a steep hill affording magnificent views out over the town, the thickly forested surroundings and as far as the Atlantic Ocean a few miles away.

This wonderfully preserved castle is quite a hike, but the extensive fortifications are a joy to clamber on, and are sometimes pretty scary too, with stomach-churning drops to the rocks below.

As usual, however, I found it very difficult to take good panoramic shots from the battlements (too hazy), and so my attention strayed instead to this giant lichen-covered boulder behind the crenellations which seemed to emphasise the sheer age of this place.

“Restaurant with a View” : Lisbon, 4th September 2011

In the grounds of Lisbon castle lies this posh restaurant with quite a wonderful backdrop : the entire city spread out in all its ancient splendour at its feet.

I wasn’t dining there, though: I travel alone, and eating fine food in restaurants is a social thing. Besides, what I save on the food bill, I spend on more upmarket accommodation, comfort after a long and sweaty day out and about being paramount.

My lunch on this day was a Magnum ice cream. That’s all!

But I did get a brief vicarious thrill as I gazed at these glasses on the spotless tablecloth.

Central Spain, September 2009: scorching temperatures, deep blue skies, the land virtually treeless, like a desert, and the ancient town of Segovia an oasis-like bastion of ancient architecture.

Here, high up in the fairy-tale Alcazar, or castle, I found the crenellations of the defensive walls a perfect contrast to the azure above.

Walking back from Carcassonne’s famous castle to the train station in September 2007, the back streets were full of beautiful old crumbling residences, largely overlooked by the tourists…which was their great loss.
