“Amber Hall” : Tokyo, 18th March 2012

Still at the Tokyo National Art Centre : here you can appreciate the sheer scale of the building with these cavernous spaces glowing in the amber tones of the natural wood fittings and surfaces.

A truly grand piece of architecture…

“Urban Glow” : Tokyo, 18th March 2012

Yep, that’s right, another view of that weird blue staircase I found in Aoyama, Tokyo. This time, though, there’s a strange yellowish glow seeping through the plastic….

“Evening Glow” : Porto, 9th September 2011

Proof that the ‘golden hour’ for photographers is the time just before the sun goes down. Or did I fake it all in post-production? You’ll never know…

“Glowing Plant Pots” : Lisbon, Portugal, 7th September 2011

This surreal looking photo looks as if it has been subjected to all manner of digital manipulation in the colour department, but actually this is not the case.

It was merely the entrance to a plush-looking hotel I noticed on the way back to my own, slightly less plush hotel in Lisbon.

I don’t know how they achieved these wild reds, but their plant pots were glowing in a most surprising manner which just had to be recorded on the Nikon, while the doorman eyed me with suspicion…

“Red Glow” : Hiroshima, Japan, 2nd December 2010

I thought about posting this simple photo many times in the past, but always gave up at the last moment, thinking that it was too clichéd, or not abstract enough.

Tonight, though, I say to hell with wild experimentation and let’s just enjoy a candle doing what candles do best – glow in a beautifully relaxing way.

It occurs to me now that in the past I would often light up scented candles of an evening and listen to music or chat with friends, but those days are long gone: why I can’t really say.

Somehow as we get older we don’t seem to have time for such luxuries, even though the intense calm and relaxation they can bring are what we need more than ever.

But somehow, I just can’t seem to revive the habit. Perhaps it is just the preserve of youth…

“The Warm Neon Glow of Home” : Saijo, Japan, 12th December 2009

Imagine you’re coming home late at night on a December evening, perhaps after some enforced overtime at the office, and as you walk from the bus stop to your flat, this is the warm welcoming view that greets you as you gaze up at the apartment building where you live…

Well, it’s a romantic image, but in reality most Japanese apartments are cramped and the building they come in is ugly and utilitarian by day.

Furthermore, I should probably come clean and confess that I got these orange tones by playing with my camera’s white balance, so the glow is a little exaggerated.

This is the companion piece to Photo of the Day #53.

“Down in Rome” : 3rd September 2010

So down, in fact, that I was touching the ground!

This is a night view of Rome’s Capitoline Hill, which is capped by an elegant piazza designed by Michelangelo.

Straight ahead is the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, and to the right, a superb museum housing some of the finest antiquities anywhere in the world.

It’s wonderful at night. There are few people there, and you can sit down on the steps and really relax, enjoying a respite from the often scorching daytime temperatures of summer.

I commemorate all of this by sticking the Nikon on the ground, dialling in a ‘wrong’ white balance setting, and just pressing the shutter without framing anything in particular.

I like this kind of shot, but I dare say many who’d like a more conventional view of the Italian capital will be disappointed.
