“Green Girders” : Tokyo, 16th March 2012

Somewhere in central Tokyo, between Ginza and the central station area, and I was slightly lost, trying to make my way to the Imperial Palace gardens when I just happened to look up as I walked beneath a flyover. What beauty to behold in both the lines and the interesting two-tone scheme the local authorities had decided to paint the thing in. Why green? Well, perhaps it was an unconscious attempt to in some tiny way make up for the ubiquitous concrete grey so much in evidence throughout the city…

“Lost in Ivy” : Porto, 9th September 2011

I’ve never seen anything quite like this. We’re all familiar with quaint little cottages draped in ivy, but this is taking it too far.

Somehow, several whole buildings had fallen apart and been totally covered by what I’m assuming to be ivy (perhaps any botanists out there can correct me on that score?).

Perhaps – and this is really frightening – it was the ivy itself which caused the destruction, in a slow but beautiful strangulation.

All hail the awesome power of nature!

“Futuristic Bank” : Lisbon, Portugal, 5th September 2011

I saw this building on a side street on my first day in Lisbon, and noted down its location, since I guessed it would look pretty good at night.

A few days later I finally got around to photographing it, and I wasn’t disappointed. The powerful lighting and futuristic design of this bank gave it a very distinctive aura after dark, with the green almost taking on a glowing, living hue as if it were partly organic, while the silvery-grey streaks heading skyward made the upper portion seem like brushed metal. Very cool!

“Industrial Green” : Hiroshima, Japan, 28th December 2011

I couldn’t really tell you what this thing is. I found it in a warehouse for some kind of delivery company. I loved the colour, and of course, with rust in the picture I had to take a few shots, much to the bewilderment of some of the workers there. They just couldn’t fathom why a foreign barbarian would want to photograph such a thing.

I wish my Japanese was good enough to say “well, I’m interested in salvaging beauty from the decaying remains of your 80′s bubble economy.”  ;-)

Autumn leaves – yes, I know it’s about the most clichéd thing possible for a photographer to take, but it’s slightly better than dogs and babies, if you ask me :)

This one dates from last November, on the first outing with my new Nikon D7000, when the contrasts between the three colours of leaves caught my eye as I strolled in the grounds of Hiroshima castle.

It’s perhaps hard to believe, but the overwhelming green in this photo of a hotel entrance in Siena, Italy, is real – that’s pretty much how it was!

Siena is a treasure trove of art, architecture and culture, but sad to say, this particular hostelry, two stars, was as rough as hell, and not up to my usual high standards ;-)

I won’t embarrass the owners by naming the place, but if you’re clever (and can be bothered), you can maybe decipher the sign…
