Yet another shot from last Friday: on the ground, in the bushes, someone had dumped large blocks of what looked like green ice, but which I suspect might be green tea…

Anyway, ants were swarming everywhere, so what better excuse to get out the 60mm macro lens and see what I could do.

Macro is tough – the depth of field is razor thin, so you have to manually preset the focus, then kind of lean in until it looks sharp and hit the shutter release.

Bear in mind too, that a 60mm lens means that if you want 1:1 reproduction, you’re only centimetres away from the critters. So I don’t think I’ll be photographing snakes just yet.

This is one of my favourite cafes in Hiroshima, a faux French place that has the most amazing cakes, on display in this picture.

What’s funny is that the waitresses shout out the orders in French, or at least a version of that language stuffed into the Japanese syllable system.

Very friendly establishment, and a little bit of a secret, so I won’t tell you the name. Not that many of you reading this are likely to appear in Hiroshima any time soon, but still…

Central Spain, September 2009: scorching temperatures, deep blue skies, the land virtually treeless, like a desert, and the ancient town of Segovia an oasis-like bastion of ancient architecture.

Here, high up in the fairy-tale Alcazar, or castle, I found the crenellations of the defensive walls a perfect contrast to the azure above.

It was raining cats and dogs and I was stuck at home with…the cats.

I peeped out onto the balcony and noticed the railings were reflected onto the wet surface amid the downpour, so I grabbed the D90 and took a few shots, some zooming in, trying to freeze the splashes, but this one was for the wider view.

Too dark and gloomy? Not enough of interest? I rather like its bleak minimalism.

Another shot from Rome’s most astonishing ancient building, the Pantheon (see Photo of the Day #28), this time from last August.

Having taken the usual shots of the dome, I wondered what it would look like if I set the exposure for the patch of blue sky in the opening above, and this was the result, with a corresponding circle of detail revealed below.

Standing on the platform of Hiroshima station, waiting for the train home.

Normally a very drab location, but I thought that if constrained within a frame, the appealing colours and shapes might look good.

The yellow strip is to assist the blind; the esoteric shapes indicate where to wait so that you are aligned with the train doors.

Done on the iPhone 4 with Picture Show.

Last December I treated myself to a Nikon 60mm f/2.8 AF-S in order to ease myself into the world of macro photography.

What better way to test it out than by going through some of the more industrial parts of Hiroshima and finding some exciting patches of rust to focus on.

The good thing about rust is that it stays still, unlike pesky bugs.

I really like rust – the textures and colours are fantastic, and getting in really close reveals an exciting jagged abstract landscape.

I went to an Irish pub in Hiroshima last night to get some fish and chips, not to mention a refreshing pint of Guinness.

I’d like to say that this place is an oasis of Western culture in this provincial Japanese city, but that would only be true if you define Western culture as idiotic shouting ex-patriots.

I didn’t stay long, but quickly thought it might be fun to try a little ‘still life’ with all the nice tones from the wooden table and beer glass in front of me.

Unusually for me, I shot this in RAW and last night worked it up in Aperture 3 with Nik Software plug-ins.

Yes, I know, it’s over-sharpened, and yes, there is that distracting patch of reflection on the table to the left of the beer glass, plus I should have used an f-stop that would’ve allowed the entire glass to be in focus, but still I find it to be a striking image.

Cheers!

Just took this a few minutes ago outside the café I’m now in. Adventures in architecture – strong lines, curves, a bit of filtering in the wonderful iPhone 4 app ‘Picture Show,’ and we have a bit of instant art to document the day.

My old pipe, done in faux 3D with the iPhone app ‘PictureShow.’ I haven’t smoked this for years, and I confess I only bought it to feign eccentricity. These days I no longer need to pretend – I am!
