“Orange Pagoda” : Miyajima, Japan, 22nd January 2011

These five-storied structures can be found all over Japan, but this one on the holy island of Miyajima, just a short ferry ride from Hiroshima, is one of the brightest and most cheerful-looking.

This striking shade also goes particularly nicely with a pale blue winter sky.

I have to walk along a narrow path next to a rice paddy to get to my house. I’d often noticed that at times the clouds reflected in the water might make a good picture, but yesterday it was particularly suitable: a ruddy sunset beginning, and the rice plants were verdant. I grabbed the camera, came out again and took a series of bracketed shots, then put them into Photomatix Pro to merge them into an HDR composite, and this was the result.

Nagasaki is a city with a more cosmopolitan heritage than most Japanese towns. As well as some areas of old European housing, there are a number of Chinese-influenced temples whose decoration is noticeably different from the Japanese norm.

This detail of the colourful temple eaves is an example of this, and was captured four years ago on my first DSLR, a Nikon D50.
