“Urban Glow” : Tokyo, 18th March 2012

Yep, that’s right, another view of that weird blue staircase I found in Aoyama, Tokyo. This time, though, there’s a strange yellowish glow seeping through the plastic….

“Aoyama Blue” : Tokyo, 17th March 2012

You wouldn’t think a humble walkway over a busy road could be in any way arresting, but this particular one I encountered in Aoyama, Tokyo, was painted in such a delightful shade of blue as to be irresistible.

It’s another example of finding something of interest after getting lost, which is what happened when I tried to take a short cut between a couple of the city’s ‘big sights’.

“Urban Carapace” : Hamamatsucho, Tokyo, 16th March 2012

Just back from a week-long trip to Tokyo where I immersed myself in photographing the urban architecture of this great metropolis.

It was a great trip – I saw a lot of new stuff, despite having been there many times before, and now I’m home again with about 800 shots to wade through and process – and I’m still not done with the ones from last September’s trip to Europe!!!

Here’s a little opener – I just loved this smeared transparent shell over the staircase on the long walkway to Hamamatsucho station from my hotel on the first morning of my holiday, all excited to be free and let loose in the Big City with only a map and a camera for companionship…

A deceptively simple and low-key beginning that is just the tip of the iceberg…

“Art Steps” : Porto, Portugal, 9th September 2011

In yesterday’s post I mentioned a modern art exhibition inside an old hall which was none too exciting.

Well, that assessment is true, but I did like these multi-coloured steps, several versions of which were placed around the gallery.

And, of course, I’ve shot them from a weird angle to add a little mystery…

“Moorish Steps” : Sintra, Portugal, 6th September 2012

Another shot from the massive and imposing Castelo dos Mouros, although it is hard to do justice to its size and scope in any one image.

I was gingerly making my way down the steep steps when I happened to notice the woman in front of me had draped her colourful shirt over her head to combat the powerful summer sun, and this, for a fleeting second, made me think of the Arabian or Berber styles of headdress which might have been worn all those centuries ago by the people who built this place, transporting me back into the ninth century.

“Concrete Wave” : Lisbon, Portugal, 5th September 2011

These modern but elegantly shaped concrete steps lie in front of Lisbon’s impressive National Pantheon (formerly the Church of Santa Engrácia), an enormous 17th century white edifice that, in contrast with the surrounding red roofs, gives the place that particular Mediterranean look.

The church and the spacious square surrounding it were strangely silent and devoid of people when I visited, although I’m not sure why, since the rest of the city was heaving with tourists.

I suppose the answer could be that this place is a little less central and therefore takes some time and effort to hunt out, not to mention a fair bit of leg-work, and that’s enough to deter most of the lazy-arsed galoots with cameras. ;-)
