“Shinto Wedding” : Tokyo, 20th March 2012

This is how a traditional Japanese wedding looks, taking place at a Shinto shrine. Things don’t get much more ‘Japanesey’ than this, and it’s a rare treat if you happen to visit when one is going on.

These days few couples opt for these ultra-traditional affairs, preferring the faux Western version done in a faux church with a faux priest.

The bride wears an ornate kimono with a totally white face, black hair tied up in the traditional style most non-Japanese will know from their ideas of geisha. The priest behind her shades her with a vermilion parasol.

I can’t remember where I stumbled upon this scene, but I’m glad I did…

“Purple Parasol” : Lisbon, Portugal, 4th September 2011

Asian women (or at least the Japanese) are often very concerned with the effects of UV on the skin, and as a result adopt parasols during the summer.

I spotted this one not in the Far East, but in Lisbon, Portugal, and couldn’t resist a bit of candid street photography.

Only later did I realise it would probably work well with the old selective colour treatment.

Composition wise, I know this image is far from perfect: I tried cropping out the gentleman in the foreground on the left, but this actually detracted from it somehow, so I’ll let it go ‘as is’.

I usually visit Kyoto once a year, since it is undoubtedly one of the great cities of the world, and practically the only one to retain any of Japan’s ancient heritage.

This particular image was taken in one of the less popular temple complexes, the exact location now forgotten, but I still remember the enormous trees and verdant greenery punctuated by the garish crimson sunshades of a little cafe.

Strong colour contrasts make for interesting photographic possibilities.

A larger version of this picture can viewed here at my dedicated website and store, Andy Lightfoot Photography.
