“Night Tram” : Lisbon, Portugal, 7th September 2011

There’s something wonderful about riding a tram. It has far more charm than a bus or a train. Maybe it’s because many tram systems in existence today are ancient and creaking, like this one in Lisbon, an obvious reminder of the past. What I like about them, though, is their immediacy and connection with the surroundings: other forms of transport are more speedy, but seal you off from the places you are passing through, whereas the old tram, with its open windows and doors and snail’s pace mean that you are much more in touch with the environment.

Hiroshima, the city I live in, has trams too, but these days many of the old stock have been replaced by sleek, newer, more efficient models, which are good, but lack entirely that thrill of riding a rickety old one.

Count yourself lucky if the place where you live still has such gems rattling around…

“Abstract Shelter” : Hiroshima, Japan, 17th December 2011

The foreground of this image depicts the edge of a bus stop shelter along a major roadway in northern Hiroshima.

Behind is the entrance to the monorail system which runs elevated above the road on enormous concrete stilts, its logo comprising the sixteen orange discs visible in the background, nicely blurred against the grey metalwork.

This monorail, which could have been such a useful transport asset for the city, turned out to be something of a fiasco. It was built some fifteen years ago for the Asian Games which were held in Hiroshima, and the priority was to link the city’s major stadium in the north with the centre, but they ran out of money and it never got as far as the train station on the other side of the city, thus rendering it of limited use in its connectivity.

To make matters worse, during construction, one of the concrete supports toppled over and killed a number of motorists in their cars below. All for the temporary prestige gained for the city during two weeks or so of second-rate sports competitions – what a waste…

More scooters : this is actually the companion shot to Photo of the Day #90 taken in early August. After I published that one, I suddenly realised that I liked this better.

I created those creamy tones in the background by applying a duotype filter to the photo, then deselecting the motorbike in the foreground to make it stand out more.

Ordinarily I’m not much a fan of scooters (as a mechanical mode of transport, I mean), but as photographic subjects, they’re pretty good!

20110820-062209.jpg

It’s always daunting when setting out on a big trip, not only the constant worry that you’ve left something vital behind, but also the complexity of the transportation that’s going to get you there.

From Hiroshima to Lyon the transport is as follows: car to Hiroshima station, bullet train to Osaka, special train to Kansai airport, flight to Istanbul, flight to Lyon, tram to city centre, walk to hotel.

That’s at least twenty hours total, if not more.

Pictured here is stage three…
